Piriformis Syndrome Treatment at Physicians Rehabilitation

Comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for piriformis syndrome is available at Physicians Rehabilitation, a network of orthopedic practices that serves residents throughout central and south Florida. Our board-certified doctors specialize in providing precision diagnostics and conservative treatment to patients with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

What is piriformis syndrome?

Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle – a small muscle in the buttock – presses against the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in the body. When this nerve is compressed, it can trigger a unique set of symptoms known as sciatica, which involves radiating pain, muscle weakness, and numbness throughout the lower body.

The causes of piriformis syndrome aren’t entirely understood, but many doctors believe that sudden injury to the buttock area or piriformis muscle spasms may lead to irritation of the sciatic nerve.

What does piriformis syndrome treatment entail?

Each patient’s ideal course of piriformis syndrome treatment will vary according to the patient’s overall health and specific symptoms. Generally speaking, though, many plans include a combination of gentle stretching, physical therapy, and hot/cold therapy. Some patients may also benefit from corticosteroid injection to reduce muscle spasms and pain. In more severe cases, surgery may be recommended to take pressure off of the sciatic nerve.
